The Sunflowers are coming!!!

One reason many people travel to Italy is to see the beautiful fields of endless sunflowers.  Catching them at the right time of year can be tricky, as it changes every year due to weather conditions and the rules of the crop rotation.  At the beginning of June, the first sunflowers start to appear, but they are still green.  They will begin to show their yellow beauty not before July, and you will have the opportunity to see them until the begining to mid-August.

Sunflowers, or “girasole” can be found throughout Italy, predominately in Florence, Arezzzo, Grosseto and the biggest area in Siena, to include Montepulciano, Montalcino, Pienza, San Gimignano and the Val d’Orcia.  If you get to catch them at sunset, even more beautiful.

Be mindful of the flowers, no picking and no tromping through the fields, or could be trouble for you if the local Carabinieri catch you!!!
